AI Interview Platform Comparison: What HR Leaders Should Look For in India (2026)

If you are running campus drives at scale in India, you have already been pitched by HireVue, Eklavvya, Alex, HeyMilo, and a half-dozen voice-AI startups including ours. Most comparison articles read like a feature checkbox grid — vendor A has bias detection, vendor B has video, vendor C has analytics. That grid is not how you decide. The decision lives in five questions that almost no vendor demo answers cleanly. Here is the AI interview platform comparison framework we wish HR leaders used before signing the SoW.

The five questions a feature grid will not answer

A 15-to-20-minute AI conversation is not a feature. It is a process — and the platform that gets it right is the one that thinks about what happens around the conversation, not just what happens during it. In our pilots we have completed roughly a thousand interviews across campus drives ranging up to a few thousand candidates in a single evening, and these are the five questions that turn out to matter.

1. Does the platform reject, or just rank?

Most AI interview platforms produce a 1-100 score and call that screening. That is ranking, not rejection. Ranking forces HR to still review every candidate in the pipeline — they just review them in score order. Real screening ends with a clear “Reject / Hold / Move forward” verdict per candidate, with the false-negative rate held near zero so HR teams can trust the rejects.

The bar HR leaders quote to us is simple: review four out of ten candidates, not six. If the platform you are evaluating cannot tell you what fraction of candidates it rejects on a representative dataset — and what its false-negative rate is on the rejects it has scored — it has not done the work yet.

2. Does it score communication from audio, or only from the transcript?

Most AI screening tools score communication from the transcript alone. That is a significant blind spot for Indian campus hiring, where written-English fluency and spoken-English fluency are very different signals. A candidate can dictate a clean transcript and still struggle to hold a 10-minute meeting in English with a US client. The transcript will not tell you that. The audio will.

Ask the vendor: “What signals do you measure from the audio that are not in the transcript?” Acceptable answers include pace (words per minute), filler/hesitation rate, pronunciation, and a fluency level. If the answer is “we transcribe with Whisper and prompt GPT,” they are not assessing communication — they are assessing prose.

3. Will it plug into the ATS we already have?

Every ATS is a project-management platform that screens poorly. That is the wedge for AI screening platforms — and the cleanest indicator of vendor maturity. If the platform you are evaluating insists on being your ATS instead of plugging into the one you already run, it is asking you to swap a switching cost for a switching cost. That is rarely a good trade for HR teams already invested in Greenhouse, Keka, Darwinbox, or an internal ATS build.

The right question is not “does your platform have a Kanban?” The right question is: “Can you push a verdict, a score, and a transcript URL into our ATS via webhook, and accept candidate intake from us via webhook?” Anything less is a re-platforming project, not a screening adoption.

4. What happens to the candidates the AI rejects?

This is the question vendors hate most. AI hiring decisions in India sit inside a regulatory window that is closing, not opening — the EU AI Act high-risk classification covers hiring AI, the Mobley vs Workday case set a US precedent, and Indian DPDP guidance is moving the same direction. If a candidate you reject files a complaint, what does the audit trail look like?

Acceptable: full transcript, audio recording, scoring rubric, the AI’s reasoning per scored dimension, and a per-candidate retention policy you control. Unacceptable: “we keep the score.” We have written separately about audit trails for AI hiring — read that before you sign.

5. Does it cost less than the phone screen it replaces?

Traditional phone screens cost ₹85–150 per candidate at 10–15 minutes each. Video interview platforms cost ₹100–300 per screen. Any AI interview platform charging more than the unit you are replacing has not done the unit-economics math, or is betting on enterprise pricing power they have not earned yet.

Pricing in India is a leading indicator of whether the vendor understands campus-hiring economics. Be wary of “contact us for pricing” — at scale, you want a per-interview rate that fits cleanly into a ₹30K-CTC fresher hiring budget.

Tradeoffs that no comparison article admits

Three honest weaknesses we see across the AI interview category — including in our own product:

  • Accent and code-switching are still hard. Pure-English screening works well; Hinglish or heavy regional code-switching still produces edge cases. Pilot the platform on candidates from the institutes you actually hire from, not the demo dataset.
  • Calibration is per-role, not universal. A scoring rubric that works for Customer Success rejects strong SDE candidates and vice versa. Any vendor who claims a single rubric works across role types is selling, not engineering.
  • Trust takes 200+ interviews. No HR team should approve an AI platform’s rejects in production until they have spot-checked at least 50 audio-recorded conversations themselves. The platforms that make that easy are the ones that survive procurement.

How to actually run a comparison pilot

The shortcut for an AI interview platform comparison in India is a 200-candidate pilot on a real role in your pipeline, run end-to-end on each finalist, with HR doing a calibration review on the first 50 conversations. That single exercise tells you more than a full feature matrix. You will see the rejection rate, the false-negative rate, the audio quality, the ATS integration friction, and the support response times — all the signals the demo cannot show.
